By using pre-made puff pastry, you can skip the intricate lamination process while still achieving a golden, flaky texture that rivals bakery-quality results. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and adaptability—you don’t need to be an expert baker to pull it off, and the results are impressive enough to wow anyone who tastes them. Whether you’re making them for a quiet family breakfast, a brunch gathering with friends, or simply to treat yourself, these chocolate croissants are sure to bring a little extra joy to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets of all-butter puff pastry (14-ounce package), thawed but kept cold
  • 1 cup high-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry

Start by lightly flouring your work surface. Unfold one sheet of cold puff pastry and roll it out gently to smooth any creases while maintaining a rectangular shape. Keep the puff pastry cold to ensure it stays firm and easy to work with. Cut the pastry vertically into four equal strips. Repeat with the second sheet, giving you eight strips in total.

Step 2: Add the Chocolate

On the lower end of each strip, place a line of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate about an inch from the edge. Fold the bottom edge over the chocolate, pressing gently to secure it. Add another line of chocolate just above the fold, and continue rolling the pastry upwards, encasing the chocolate in layers. Brush a bit of beaten egg along the top edge to help seal the croissant. This step ensures the croissants stay closed during baking.

Step 3: Shape and Chill the Croissants

Once rolled, gently press the seam side down and shape the croissant slightly to ensure an even bake. Arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving enough space between each for expansion. Brush the tops generously with the remaining egg wash for a shiny, golden finish. Refrigerate the croissants for 20 minutes to firm up the pastry, which helps achieve better flakiness in the oven.

Step 4: Preheat the Oven

While the croissants chill, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Ensuring the oven is hot before baking helps the puff pastry rise quickly and evenly.

Step 5: Bake to Perfection

Once the croissants have chilled, bake them in the preheated oven for 26–27 minutes, or until they are puffed up and a deep golden brown. Keep an eye on them during the final minutes to prevent over-browning. The irresistible aroma of buttery pastry and chocolate will fill your kitchen as they bake.

Step 6: Cool and Serve

Allow the croissants to cool on a wire rack for 20–30 minutes. Dust them lightly with powdered sugar before serving for a beautiful, bakery-inspired finish. Serve warm or at room temperature alongside a steaming cup of coffee or tea for the ultimate treat.

Notes

For the best results, ensure your puff pastry remains cold throughout the preparation process. Warm pastry can become difficult to work with and may not puff up as well during baking. If needed, chill the pastry in the refrigerator between steps.

Additionally, using high-quality chocolate will elevate the flavor of your croissants. Opt for semi-sweet or dark chocolate with a smooth, rich taste.

Enjoy these croissants fresh for the ultimate flaky and buttery texture. Leftovers can be reheated to revive their crispness, but nothing beats the joy of savoring them straight from the oven!
